When you first open Wego, the interface looks simple enough – enter departure, destination, and dates. But I quickly realized that the real work happens after you hit search. The app pulls rates from dozens of online travel agencies and airlines, showing a single total price that includes taxes, fees, and any surcharges. That upfront transparency is helpful, but I found that some fares still add a credit card surcharge (typically 2-3%) that appears only at the final payment step. So the "total" you see in search results isn't always the final total – you need to proceed to the checkout screen to confirm.
The Real Experience: Pros and Honest Limitations
I’ve used Wego to book three round trips over the past six months, and the price trend feature genuinely helped me decide when to buy. For a trip from New York to Tokyo, the app showed that prices were lowest on Tuesdays – and I saved roughly $120 by waiting two days. That kind of data-driven insight is rare in free travel apps. However, the platform has clear boundaries. For instance, if your passport has only a single name (common in some countries), the app forces you to enter the same name in both the first and last name fields, and then you must call customer support before completing the booking. I tried that once and got a quick response, but it's an extra step that isn't well advertised. Also, once you confirm, name changes are strictly prohibited – no flexibility there.
Payment, Invoices, and When to Call Support
Wego accepts Visa and MasterCard credit or debit cards. I prefer using a debit card because it avoids the surcharge that credit cards often attract. For invoicing, the e-ticket serves as your receipt, but if you need a resend of the confirmation email – which happened to me when my inbox filtered it as spam – you can request it from support within minutes. One practical limitation: the app doesn't store your passport details or frequent flyer numbers, so you'll need to enter them fresh each time. That's a minor annoyance but worth noting if you book frequently. Overall, Wego works best for travelers who are comfortable comparing many options and don't mind a few extra clicks to avoid hidden fees.
