Crypta - Gallery Locker
After testing more privacy apps than I care to count, Crypta - Gallery Locker stayed on my phone for six months. It's a gallery locker app that keeps photos, videos, documents, and entire apps locked behind fingerprint, PIN, or pattern. The real draw is how quietly it works—no nagging upgrade prompts, no lock-screen spam.
First Run: Setup and the Launcher Catch
Right after the first launch, you choose a PIN and register a fingerprint. That takes about a minute. What surprised me was the app-hider feature: to hide icons from the home screen, Crypta - Gallery Locker needs to be your default launcher—not a shortcut or a widget, an actual home screen replacement. That part is perfect if you already use a custom launcher, and it's the first thing to skip if you don't. I kept the launcher for two days, then switched back; photo and document locking worked fine throughout.
Cloud Sync, Encryption, and the Restore Process
The Google Drive integration is why I kept Crypta - Gallery Locker installed. After linking your Google account, encrypted copies of locked items go into an app-specific folder in Drive, never mixed with normal photos. That encrypted Google Drive backup only contains files you locked locally, which is exactly what I wanted. I restored my files after a factory reset, and nothing else in Drive was touched. A second phone pulls the same files back once you log into the same account. The sync itself is manual: you trigger it from the backup menu, and "real-time" only means that after a manual refresh, changes appear elsewhere—not a continuous background sync.
Known Limits: Intruder Alerts, Recycle Bin, and File Transfers
Intruder selfie capture is a useful alarm: after a few failed PIN attempts, it silently snaps the front camera and stores the shot inside the vault. But it only triggers on PIN or pattern failures, not on repeated fingerprint rejects. Face-down auto-lock works on sensor; on a table it is reliable, but in a jacket pocket accidental triggers made me disable it. QR-based transfers require both devices on the same Wi-Fi or hotspot, plus the same app installed on the target phone. In my transfer test, files reached an older tablet, but the folder structure came over flattened—I had to re-organize albums afterwards.
Practical Tips for a Vault That Lasts
If you plan to hide apps, set Crypta - Gallery Locker as default launcher first and test whether your favorite gestures survive the change. Avoid storing Google Drive recovery codes inside the vault itself; losing the PIN and the backup together makes the files unreachable. Keep the recycle bin ON for at least a month before deleting sensitive videos, since items cleared from the bin are gone without warning. And every time you export a file out of the locker, it lands as a decrypted copy in the default download folder—clear that folder right after, or the privacy loop has a hole.
I still use this app daily for document scans and a few old videos. The launcher catch, manual sync, and flattened QR transfers are real annoyances. But for the core job of hiding photos and videos on Android, it has held up better than the dozen other vault apps I deleted within a week.
